Period Poverty
Period Poverty has been a deep lying issue in Kenya for generations. 65% of women cannot afford sanitary pads. An astonishing 10% of 15-year-old girls are involved in commercial sex in exchange for sanitary products due to the prevalence of period poverty and the shame, stigma and public health miss information which surround menstruation.
Having identified this issue, Marafiki Relief Aid Africa came up with a long-term solution and established 1 workshop space donated by a school in the Bamba area, Kilifi County, Mariango Sub- County where the workshop will stitch reusable pads that are environmentally friendly, long-term usability, cost effective, reduces the risk of bacterial infections, tried and tested by village girls, we also found that reusable pads outweigh the benefits.
Thanks to donors Marafiki Relief Aid Africa has been able to donate reusable pads to different areas such as Lamu, Voi, Mandera, Garissa, Garsen, Kwake, Kilifi areas etc.
